A brief history of the Town of Coffeeville.
The first white person to settle in what is now the
Town of Coffeeville was a young pioneer and trader from Tennessee.
He came here about 1829 and did a profitable trading with the Indians.
Coffeeville is located near the boundary line that then
divided the hunting grounds of the Choctaw and Chickasaw Indian Tribes,
In 1830 in what is known as the "Treaty of Dancing Rabbit" the Choctaws
a similar treaty was made with the Chickasaws. These treaties were
negotiated by General John Coffee who was given the assignment of
surveying the boundary lines between the two Indian Nations and keeping
peace. He and his soldiers established a camp on a high hill overlooking
what is now the Town of Coffeeville which was named in his honor.
Yalobusha County in which Coffeeville is located was
established in 1833. In 1852 a part of this county was surrendered to
Calhoun County and in 1870 Grenada County was established from territory
that had been a part of Yalobusha County, At present Yalobusha County
contains an area of 490 square miles bounded on the north by Panola and
Lafayette Counties, on the east by Calhoun County, on the south by
Grenada County and on the west by Tallahatchie County.
The Town of Coffeeville was incorporated in 1836. The
first bank was established in 1838, The first courthouse was built in
1839. The first railroad through Coffeeville was built during the period
1856-1858 and the first train to run through the town came in 1858. The
first court of Yalobusha County was held here in 1834. Coffeeville has
continued to be a county seat since that time. In 1873 Yalobusha County
was divided into two districts. Since then Water Valley has been the
county seat of one district and Coffeeville has been the county seat of
the other.
Located on Highways 7 and 330, Coffeeville has always
been a good town in which to reside and raise a family. It has good
churches, good schools, good public utilities --water, gas, and
electricity and foremost, good people. While farming has been the
leading means of livelihood in this area, cattle and other stock
raising, garment manufacturing and sporting activities add greatly to
the economy and welfare of the community. At this time the population is
approximately 1,100.
